- Calisthenics Therapy

Calisthenics - training the body to be controlled, coordinated, and strong is the basis for more than simple spot toning or building strength. Calisthenics is also used to prevent pain, heighten awareness, express vitality, and even for self defense.
Tension. Our modern civilization has presented us with paradox: it has eliminated most of the daily physical activities we need for fitness and at the same time has increased the tensions that can be best released by physical activity. Our bodies are under-exercised but we are over stimulated, easily frustrated by situations beyond our control - by noise, pollution, overcrowding. The tension and stress of our daily lives too often lead to tight muscles, pain, and even physical or mental impairment. Who has not felt muscles in the neck, shoulders, and back tightened under emotional strain? Exercises that stretch these muscles can have a dramatic relaxing effect. Headaches caused by tensed neck muscles may also be cured by exercise.
Back Pain. Some researchers believe that more than 80 percent of all back-pain cases are caused by under-exercise combined with stress and strain and have successfully treated such problems with calisthenics. If you failed one or more of the Kraus-Weber tests you probably have or will have back pain. Those very same Kraus-Weber exercises, plus the lifting exercises, can be used to strengthen back and abdominal muscles and hip flexors. And since back pain is also called "tension syndrome", tension relievers also help loosen up tight back muscles. Hip rotation exercises (knee roll and leg-over) loosen vertebrae. Doctors also recommend swimming for back-pain sufferers because the horizontal position and support of the water relieve strain on vertebrae.
